Some of the sunken boats in Northland's Tūtūkākā Marina could be refloated today and tomorrow.
Salvage experts and insurance assessors have been heading north to the facility which was hit by a wave generated by Tonga's volcanic explosion.
About six vessels have sunk but there could be more smaller run-abouts submerged and not yet found.
Northland regional harbourmaster Jim Lyall said damage to the marina could have been worse.
Lyall said many boats were still trapped in the marina by pontoons twisting and blocking exits.
Authorities will start freeing the boats once salavage of the sunken vessels is finished.
