One of Christchurch's major anchor projects post-quake is on track to open in 2024.
The Court Theatre was forced to move out of its original home in the Arts Centre after the February 2011 earthquake and set up camp at a temporary site.
The completed three-storey theatre will house a 360-seat main playhouse auditorium, a 130-seat studio theatre and front-of-house facilities.
Early works started on the central city site began in December - with contractors sheet piling down to six metres and setting up the facilities, excavating and decontaminating the site, and creating the gravel raft the building will rest on.
Council spokesperson Alistair Pearson expects construction of the $36 million project to start in March.
"It's one of those key anchor projects and it's coming to fruition now which is really exciting for us as an organisation," he said.
"It's ticking along exactly as we expected it to, so we're very excited because it's all coming together."
Councillors recently agreed to begin the second stage of the design process, the preliminary design, in January.
