A man has been critically injured after he was pulled from a vehicle and assaulted on the Waikato Expressway this afternoon.

Police say a section of the expressway remains closed while a scene examination is completed. Diversions are now in place.
At about 4.45pm police received multiple reports of an altercation at the expressway south of Rangiriri, involving a number of people and vehicles, including "a significant number of motorcycles".
Police said initial indications suggested that a man had been pulled from a vehicle and assaulted.
He was taken to hospital with critical injuries.
Police have asked for anyone who witnessed this incident or anyone who might have dashcam footage to contact them.
