A union for allied health workers says members have no option but to launch strike action for 24 hours tomorrow.
The final preparations are being put in place as around 10,000 workers from 70 health professions prepare to walk off the job.
They include dental assistants, alcohol and drug counsellors and anaesthetic and laboratory technicians.
DHBs across the country are deferring many elective surgeries and clinics because of the strike.
PSA organiser Will Matthews said the industrial action was a last resort after DHBs failed to meet the workers' pay claim.
"This dispute is about getting a pay offer for allied health workers that not only shows them that they are valued parts of the health system, but also helps them keep track with the skyrocketing cost of living."
The DHBs and the unions have agreed to retain life-preserving services during the industrial action.
