Christchurch's new mayor says there's more important things to spend money on that upgrading the streets around the new central city stadium.
The proposed upgrade to the streets is being put on hold, despite consultation starting weeks ago, Christchurch City Council chief executive Dawn Baxendale said.
Mayor Phil Mauger welcomed the move and said he suspected Baxendale had listened to concerns from him and from others.
"If we are spending that sort of money, there's a lot better places for it to be spent, there's more roads in the east that - people are still suffering 11 years after the earthquake - that need a lot more attention than these ones do at the moment," Mauger said.
Spending on those central city roads would not be a good look when the council had said it needed help to pay for the stadium in the first place, he said.
