A large scrub fire on a mountain peak in the Hawke's Bay on 4 November is suspected to have been caused by fireworks.

The fire on Te Mata Peak in Havelock North broke out shortly after 8.30pm. Four fire trucks attended the incident and it was almost fully contained by midnight.

Emergency services closed public access to the peak. Waimarama and Te Mata Peak Roads have reopened.

Police said no houses were threatened by the blaze but was urging the public to avoid the area.
