Countdown is recalling a specific batch of its name-brand ham sold in Taranaki, because of the possible presence of listeria.

The product in question is the "free-farmed half leg of ham" sold between 8-12 December with a use-by date of 27 February 2023.

It has been sold in various weights at Countdown's Spotswood, Manadon St and South Rd stores in New Plymouth.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has urged customers to check the date on their ham and not eat any affected items.

There have been no reports of associated illness, the ministry's statement said, however if anyone has consumed any of this product and has any concerns about their health, they should seek medical advice.

Customers should return the product to their retailer for a refund.

Listeria infections are rare but can be life-threatening, especially for high-risk groups. It is most dangerous for: Pregnant women, newborns, older people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

People at high risk should contact a doctor immediately if they think they have been infected.

Most people recover fully. Healthy adults will probably only get mild flu-like symptoms or gastroenteritis.
