Police forensic specialists are examining a house in Mangere Bridge after a body was found in a car outside a South Auckland police station yesterday.
A man went to the counter of the counties Manukau Police Station yesterday and spoke to officers, who then located the body.
The 24-year-old appeared in the Manukau District Court today to face an assault-related offence and police say the charge is likely to be upgraded.
A tent has been set up near a house in Mona Street in south Auckland. The house and part of a nearby park, Hastie Avenue Reserve, are cordoned off.
Police say a post mortem is taking place on the body found in a car, parked outside an Auckland police station.
The arrested man will reappear in court next week.
A resident of Auckland's Mangere Bridge neighbourhood said she is shaken.
The resident, who has young children, said she's staying vigilant about safety in the area.
"After hearing what has happened, we're just kind of more vigilant about our kids and just our surroundings and just being aware of what's been happening in the neighbourhood.
"But I feel like because this is the first time something like this has happened, we're very concerned for the person that has passed away and obviously, the family."
At least three police officers in white boiler suits are continuing to examine the house this evening.
