A teenager has died after an accident at a central Auckland skate park last night.

Emergency services rushed to Victoria Park at around 9.15pm on Sunday where a 17-year-old was found injured.

A police spokesperson said he was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but died shortly later.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

In 2018, a skateboarder's death prompted the installation of razor wire to stop people trying to skate down the wall.

Pitiphong Sangsirichat, 25, was seriously injured at the Victoria Park Skate Plaza on 27 January when he fell from the top of the structure.

He died two days later in hospital.

The wire was intended to stop people climbing onto the top to try to skate down the whole wall and onto the ramp.

Auckland Council general manager of community facilities Rod Sheridan said following the death, the council had worked with the New Zealand Transport Agency to prevent access to the top of the building.

That included having a security guard present on the site.
