A man has been shot in the leg in an altercation believed to involve gang members.
Police said the incident took place in the Bay of Plenty's Ōpōtiki on Saturday around 5pm and were seeking help from the public.
The man was located by police with an "apparent gunshot wound to the leg, following an altercation understood to involve gang members", a statement said.
The man remained in hospital but was in a stable condition.
Police said investigators were working to figure out what had happened - and hold those responsible to account.
"Initial inquiries suggest the matter involved parties are known to each other and police do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the wider public.
"Police would like to hear from anyone with information about what happened or the parties involved."
