Supporters of an iconic train service near Dunedin are delighted the local council is committing to keep it going.
The Taieri Gorge train line runs from Wingatui, near Dunedin, to Middlemarch.
It was mothballed in 2020 before returning with a reduced service while the Dunedin City Council considered its options.
The council has committed, in principle, to retaining the service as a part of the city's visitor economy.
Chief executive Sandy Graham said it meant they could focus on the best options to secure and enhance the Taieri Gorge experience.
"This will include potential new operating models for both the service and its maintenance requirements, as well as options to enhance the journey through the gorge itself," Graham said.
"The Taieri Gorge remains one of the world's great train journeys and this is an important step towards securing its future."
Strath-Taieri Community Board chair Barry Williams said the council's commitment was fantastic news.
"I think we're looking at the future. This is for future generations."
Further updates will be provided to the council in time for its 10-year plan 2024-34.
Train operations will continue in their current form in the meantime.
