Police are yet to find three remand prisoners on the run after escaping from a prison van on Auckland's Southern Motorway.

The prisoners got out near the Ellerslie-Panmure off-ramp yesterday afternoon while their van was heading to Mt Eden prison and then stole a member of the public's car.

Police are now appealing to the public for help to find the trio - Zane Hepi, 24, Billy Fepulea'i, 43, and Joseph Ng Wun, 45.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said a "dedicated" team of officers was working to find them.

He urged anyone who may have information about the trio to come forward.

"Our focus remains on locating the prisoners; however, we would like to remind people that anyone who is helping these men avoid police could be liable for criminal charges."

Information can also be given anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Department of Corrections has launched a review into how the prisoners escaped.
