Bluebridge cancelled more sailings across Cook Strait on Monday, after yet another breakdown.
An engineering fault was found on the Strait Feronia while the ferry was in Picton on Sunday night.
The ship was returning to Wellington on Monday morning for repairs, and four planned sailings have been cancelled.
Bluebridge said there was no space for vehicles on other sailings in the next few weeks, so the only option was to refund those passengers.
It has apologised for the disruption.
There have been various cancellations of ferries across the Cook Strait recently, including both Bluebridge and Interislander-operated lines, due to faults and bad conditions.
