A Wellington man has escaped serious injury after being hit by a truck and dragged 10m down a street.
Troy Hammond was driving to work on Tuesday when his Vespa scooter and a rubbish truck collided, pinning him under the truck.
"I was really scared; I felt like my legs were broken and crushed and my natural state was just to try and get out," he told RNZ.
"I kept screaming 'get the truck off me'."
Hammond said a woman rushed to his aid and held his hand while phoning for an ambulance.
"She just calmed me down and held my hand and just spoke really lovely to me."
Others tried to lift the truck off his legs.
Hammond said he could not remember what the woman had said to him while he was trapped, but she helped to keep him calm while he waited for an ambulance.
He said he had been able to track her down and had sent her flowers.
