Auckland police are seeking public help to work out how a Grey Lynn man suffered serious injuries last Thursday.

The 53-year-old sustained head and facial injuries on 4 May and remains in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital.

Police said he was seen riding a bicycle around the Grey Lynn shops on Great North Road at around 8am and then seen walking with a woman on Tuarangi Road at 8.25am.

He was seen to collapse in Williamson Avenue, near the intersection with Grosvenor Street at about 8.45am, but did not have his bike with him.

Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff Baber said police were continuing to keep an open mind around the man's injuries and whether anything untoward happened to him prior to falling.

''There is nothing to suggest this woman was involved in inflicting any injuries on the man, however we would like to speak with her about the interaction with him.''

She is described as Caucasian, with long light-coloured hair, wearing glasses, a blue dress and white shoes.

Police are asking anyone in the area who may have seen the man riding his bike on Thursday morning between 8-8.45am in Grey Lynn to contact them.

Police are also issuing CCTV images capturing the man as part of this appeal.

''There may be the possibility someone has come across this bike since then, and we would like to hear from them to assist this investigation,'' Baber said.

Locals or business owners in the area who could assist the investigation were asked to get in touch, he said.
