Police in Whakatane have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man found with serious injuries in a carpark in the Bay of Plenty town.
They say George Maaka, 57, was found in the car park on Garaway Street in the early hours of the morning of 18 May.
He died three days later as a result of his injuries.
A 64-year-old man appeared in Whakatane District Court on Saturday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
"We continue to urge anyone who has information that [could] assist with our investigation to contact police," said Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson.
