Baring Head Lighthouse in Wellington has been added to the New Zealand Heritage List.
Located on the coast of Wainuiomata, it is the only lighthouse in Aotearoa still in its original condition.
Parks planner for Greater Wellington Fiona Colquhoun said the lighthouse, which was built in 1935, was a "historical gem".
"Greater Wellington have been working with Friends of Baring Head for years to restore the lighthouse complex.
"This decision by Heritage New Zealand recognises the significance of the site in New Zealand's history, and will support the protection of its historical features for future generations to appreciate."
World War II features in the nearby regional park will also be added to the heritage list.
New signage will also soon be installed, directing more people to enjoy the area's history and natural beauty, and there was work under way to make the lighthouse cottages bookable for overnight stays.
Colquhoun said the two cottages in the complex once housed the lightkeepers and their families.
Friends of Baring Head Trust Chair Paula Warren hoped the heritage status would lead more of the community to explore the area.
"People should seek out this unique treasure on their doorstep."
She said there were new tracks which would make it easier for hikers, cyclists and riders to get to the lighthouse.
