The search for Michael MacGregor - who has been missing for five days - is being switched to a new area today.

MacGregor was last seen at the Rocky Lookout on Mt Holdsworth, northeast of Welllington, at about 12.20pm on Monday.

In a statement, police said they were focusing on the Atiwhakatu Stream today.

The weather in the lower North Island this week has been hampering the search, police said on Thursday.

Police Search and Rescue, Land Search and Rescue volunteers and a specialist canyoning search and rescue team have been deployed.

Ground search teams will be searching near the Atiwhakatu Stream and the canyoning team will be searching the water.

As there will be specialist teams in the water, police have requested members of the public do not enter the stream.

"While they may have the best intentions, unauthorised people in the stream place both themselves and the specialists at risk," a spokesperson said.

Police also repeated their appeal for any information that might assist them in trying to find MacGregor.

Anyone who has seen him or has information that may help with the search is asked to contact officers via 105 and quote reference event number: P055522968
