An alleged attempt to rob a cannabis grower has gone wrong for a man who was shot, before he and his accomplices were arrested, police say.
Detective Inspector Al Symonds said four men were arrested after trying to rob a house in the Whangārei suburb of Raumanga just after 1pm on Tuesday.
"Four men with gang connections approached a house ... intending to deprive the occupant of a substantial cannabis cultivation," Symonds said.
"Whilst forcing entry to the house the occupier has shot one of the intruders. This person received a minor injury and was treated at the scene."
Four men, aged between 27 and 45 years old, were charged with aggravated robbery.
They are scheduled to appear in the Whangārei District Court on Wednesday.
"We have no tolerance for this sort of behaviour and we hope these quick arrests bring some reassurance to our wider community."
Symonds said a 38-year-old man was also facing firearms and drug charges as a result of the alleged incident.
