Police investigating an aggravated robbery at Point Chevalier have made an arrest in relation to the raid.

A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm in relation to a raid on the Wapiti Sports Bar on Carrington Road, Point Chevalier.

Police said several people armed with hammers and a firearm had threatened staff at the bar about 2am on Saturday, making off with cash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthews of Auckland City CIB said police made the arrest after a search at a Manurewa property on Monday night, where a shotgun was found.

The arrested person was a Crips gang member, he said.

"This arrest was in part a result of information received from the public.

"We would like to extend our thanks to the community for coming forward with information which has contributed to this quick arrest."

A 23-year-old at the address was arrested on an unrelated matter, Matthews said.

The 26-year-old man charged in relation to the robberies will appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday.

In a second robbery, police were called to the Harlequin Sports Bar on Great North Road, Point Chevalier about 1am on Friday. They said a shot was fired after a group armed with hammers and a firearm had entered the building. Money from the tills and gaming machines was taken.

Police believe the same group was responsible for an aggravated robbery at the Mt Albert Sports Bar on New North Road about 2.20am on Thursday.
