A pocketknife and baton were among items police seized from a Canterbury University hall of residence last week.

A University of Canterbury spokesperson said police were called to an incident at Tupuānuku hall in the early hours of the morning on 19 October.

No one was harmed in the incident, the spokesperson said.

The university understands from police there were no guns found or involved.

Police said a 20-year-old man was taken into custody and has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon - a pocketknife - and unlawful possession of restricted weapons - a baton.

Ammunition was also seized by police.

The man will appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

The university spokesperson said student and staff wellbeing and safety was important and it was taking the matter seriously.

"UC offers numerous student support services and we encourage any student who needs support to make contact.

"Students who feel their assessment performance has been affected can apply for special consideration."

Unilodge, which manages the hall of residence, has been supporting students directly affected by the incident last Thursday.

Unilodge said it would not be making any comments as the matter was part of a police investigation and before the courts.

Meanwhile, the Canterbury University Students' Association said the seizure of weapons and the arrest of a man at a university hall of residence had been stressful for students.

President Pierce Crowley said many students were concerned and the students' association was offering support.

That included ensuring that the affected students could get access to special consideration if their study had been badly affected, he said.

Crowley said it was already a stressful time of year, with exams about to start.
