Police are appealing for information about how a man who was found with serious injuries under a bridge in Wainui, Gisborne, last week may have sustained his injuries.
The man was transported to Waikato Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition, after being found under the Okitu Bridge on Moana Road around 10.30am on Sunday.
Police said initial inquiries had established the injured man was a Wainui resident who lived a short distance from where he was found.
He walked daily from his home on Wairere Road to the Makarori Headland and back, police said - usually around mid-morning.
The man was described as being 160cm tall and reasonably frail, with a slight stoop.
He was wearing a thin blue long-sleeve thermal top, black fleecy trackpants and brown/black tramping boots when he was found injured.
Police said they wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen the man on Sunday morning, or who had any information about how he may have sustained his injuries.
They were also seeking CCTV footage of the Wairere Road (Ocean Park end) and Okitu Bridge area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 105 or online, quoting the reference number: 231022/2943.
