Marble-sized hailstones, flash flooding and thousands of lightning strikes were reported across Canterbury yesterday.
Stormy weather took hold yesterday afternoon, with severe thunderstorm warnings in place, but it eased by 6.30pm.
MetService meteorologist Clare O'Connor said the worst hit areas were Ashburton, Geraldine, and Waimate through to Timaru.
Hailstones with a diameter of 10mm to 15mm hit these areas and probably damaged crops, O'Connor said.
More than 2700 lightning strikes were recorded from the south of Christchurch to Invercargill yesterday afternoon.
