Four people have been taken to hospital after a crash on State Highway 1 north of Kaikōura this afternoon.
Police say seven people were injured in the two-vehicle crash in Kekerengu about 1.30pm.
St John said four people have been taken to hospitals in Wellington and Wairau.
Diversions are in place, and the road is expected to be closed for a long period of time.
