A stretch of State Highway 2 at Ormond, north of Gisborne, has closed after a serious crash.
Police are responding to the two-vehicle crash on the intersection of Matawai Road and Back Ormond Road.
The state highway between Brown Road and Lavenham Road is closed and emergency services are on the scene.
One person is in a serious condition and one person is in a moderate to serious condition.
The road is closed and diversions are in place, motorists are advised to expect delays.
Near Ashburton, a person is in a critical condition after a two-car crash.
Police say a helicopter was called to the scene, on Longbeach Road in Willowby.
The crash was reported about 5.30pm this evening.
The road is blocked and motorists are advised to expect delays.
