Fire crews have put out a fire in a commercial building in the Christchurch suburb of Bromley.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said five crews were sent to the industrial area at 11.20am.

The fire spewed thick, black smoke into the air and Fire and Emergency said police had been helping with traffic management where smoke had obscured the road.

Three crews remain on site dampening down hotspots.

There have been no reports of injuries or anyone being inside at the time.
