A street in central Wellington has reopened after police closed it while responding to an "item of concern".

In a statement, police said a report had been received about an item of concern at a premises on Brandon Street.

The street was closed at Featherston Street and Lambton Quay while the item was assessed.

It has since re-opened.

"Inquiries determined the item was not of concern and police are due to leave the scene shortly."

A reporter at the scene said it was business as usual on the street, and just one police car could be seen opposite the Iraeli embassy.
