Person killed in west Auckland house fire

Investigators hope they will this afternoon be able to recover the body of a person who died in an overnight fire.

Emergency services were called to a property on Rathgar Road in the west Auckland suburb of Henderson about 12.40am.

A garage or shed was on fire behind the house and a person was found dead at the scene.

Police said the death was being treated as unexplained.

A scene examination was being carried out on Thursday afternoon.

"We hope to be in the position to recover the person's body from the scene later today," police said in a statement.

"Formal identification procedures are yet to be completed and will be carried out at a later stage.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the person's whānau after what has occurred overnight."

The death would be referred to the coroner, police said.
