The 31-year-old man shot dead by an officer in Waikato after allegedly threatening a family with a firearm was known to police.
On Thursday, police shot the man after a lengthy incident which began when he allegedly pulled a firearm on police and fled when he was signalled to pull over.
Police later found him at a rural address in Matamata-Piako where he was threatening a parent and their child.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton said police understood how unsettling such an incident was for the community and a police presence would remain in the area for the coming days.
"Police are continuing to establish the sequence of what occurred, in an incident that spanned an area of more than 50km.
"We believe members of the public can assist the investigation and we would like to hear from anyone who has video or photos of the vehicles involved."
McNaughton said the man was originally driving along Ulster Street and Wairere Drive in Hamilton in a silver Mazda MPV when he was pursued by police.
While on Wairere Drive, he allegedly stole a black BMW 120i and continued to evade police, driving into Matamata-Piako where the car crashed on McLaren Road.
"Motorists and residents are asked to review any imagery they may have from dashcam, CCTV or phones of the pursuit.
"We also want to hear from anyone who witnessed the events, even if they do not have footage of them."
