Auckland Transport is warning attendees of an annual LGBTQ+ festival which is being held today that there could be significant congestion in the central city.
Thousands are expected to flock to Coyle Park at Point Chevalier on Sunday for the annual Big Gay Out, which commemorates pride month and celebrates the LGBTQ+ community.
AT director of public transport and active modes Stacey van der Putten is asking attendees to plan their trips ahead with delays in mind.
She suggested taking public transport, with the 66 bus and Outer Link bus services stopping near the venue.
"There'll be extra buses on these services running more often to help people get there and back home. The 66 bus also services Mt Albert train station, making it a good option for train users," she said.
The Big Gay Out would also be operating its own bus services from Karangahape Road, Britomart and Henderson, however users would need to purchase online tickets in advance because AT HOP cards would not work.
Van der Putten said drivers should be aware of ongoing road construction on part of Meola Road near the venue in Point Chevalier.
"Meola Road is closed to motorists from Garnet Road, though we have made sure that both lanes of Pt Chevalier Road will be temporarily open for the event," she said.
"Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) will also be monitoring the area proactively and will manage traffic light phasing to ease congestion where possible."
