Police are focusing on finding out how a man went overboard from a fishing vessel off the Hawke's Bay coast on Monday night.
The search for the fisher who was reported missing from the Pacific Challenger was put on hold.
Police on Thursday said they were conducting enquiries into the circumstances of what happened.
No further active searching was planned as it was unlikely to find him, they said.
