Police have named the four people who died in a crash on State Highway 8 near Lake Pukaki over Easter.

They were Megat Ashman Aqif Megat Irman Jefni, 21, and Wan Adlina Alisa, 20 - both students from Malaysia who attended Canterbury University.

Gavin James William Beere, 85, of Christchurch, and Phillip Wayne Woodham, 71, of Ashburton, also died.

Four others were injured when the two vehicles and a motorcycle collided between Hayman Road and Tekapo Canal Road on Saturday afternoon.

The High Commission for Malaysia said one of the students has been buried in Christchurch, while a repatriation process was underway for the other student.

Members of both their families travelled to New Zealand after the crash.

Police say inquiries are continuing.
