The man who died in Hāwera on Monday has been named as 26-year-old Whatitiri Whakaruru.
Police launched a homicide investigation following Whakaruru's death and a 46-year-old has been arrested.
In a statement Detective Senior Sergeant Debbie Gower said police were supporting Whakaruru's family during this "distressing" time and offered their "sincere condolences".
"Police and forensic scientists are continuing with the scene examination.
"While we are not seeking anyone else in relation to his death we are seeking any information which can assist our investigation."
Gower said police wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen anything on Gladstone Road on Monday between 9.30pm and 11pm.
