A 4.9 magnitude earthquake has struck 70 km south-west of Waverley, in the North Island.
Geonet says it was 83 km deep.
Thousands of people have reported feeling the quake, with most reporting it as light or weak shaking.
It was widely felt from Taranaki to the top of the South Island, Geonet said.
