The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is reporting a suspected diesel spill in Tauranga Harbour and warning people to stay away from the area.

In a post on its Facebook page, the council said the spill was north of Sulphur Point and around Waikorire/Pilot Bay, between Mount Maunganui and Tauranga.

The council's maritime and compliance teams were responding to the incident, and clean-up efforts were under way.

It was difficult to tell the amount of diesel involved, but initial estimates were that it was less than 100 litres.

"For your safety and to aid in the clean-up process, please avoid the shoreline at Waikorire Pilot Bay, until the clean-up is completed," the council said.
