Wellington City Council says permanent bus lane cameras will boost the reliability and efficiency of bus services along the city's busiest commuter routes.
The council is rolling out cameras to monitor lanes on Adelaide Road and Manners Street from 10 June with more to come.
Motorists driving for more than 50 metres in a bus lane could be issued with a $150 fine while vehicles parking in bus or cycle lanes could be slapped with a $60 infringement fee and additional towing costs, a council spokesperson said.
Road users were advised to check signage for when bus lanes were in effect and whether the lane was a regular bus lane or a bus-only lane.
Bus lanes could be used by bikes, mopeds, motorbikes, in-service taxis and other vehicles using the lane for less than 50 metres in order to turn left into another street or drive way.
But a bus-only could only be used by buses, although emergency vehicles could travel in either style of lane when responding to an emergency.
