The cold snap is continuing in the South Island as parts of the North Island prepared for rain Thursday.

A wintry blast has closed roads and brought snow in the South this week.

Te Anau had the lowest temperature with -5.9C on Thursday morning. Invercargill, Gore, Queenstown and Wanaka were also in the negatives this morning.

Burkes Pass between Tekapo and Fairlie was closed after heavy snowfall. It was expected to reopen by 10am.

Metservice issued road snowfall warnings for Porters Pass and Lewis Pass on Wednesday night, but lifted the warning for Porters Pass on Thursday morning.

It forecast rain in the north of the North Island, although yellow rain watches for Coromandel and Bay of Plenty were lifted early on Thursday.
