One person missing from boat in Auckland's Manukau Harbour

Coastguard has confirmed a search for a person missing from a boat in Auckland's Manukau Harbour has finished for the night.

Coastguard said there were two people on a boat that got into difficulty near Puketutu Island on Tuesday.

One person was able to swim back to shore and alerted police, but the other was still missing.

On Tuesday night, Coastguard confirmed that the boat was being towed back to shore and the search had finished for the night.

Police confirmed they responded to a distress call just before 6pm.

"A search was initiated for two people believed to be in the water. One person has been located safe and well and requires no medical attention."

Coastguard volunteers on three boats from Titirangi and Papakura were called to the harbour shortly after 6pm on Tuesday. Auckland Airport's hovercraft and Westpac Rescue Helicopter also earlier assisted in the search.

A RNZ employee said they could see two helicopters circling the area shortly after 7.30pm on Tuesday.
