The man accused of murdering a 54-year-old entomologist in Auckland at the weekend has appeared in court.

Stephen Thorpe was allegedly killed at the Blockhouse Bay Tennis Club on Saturday morning.

He suffered injuries consistent with stab wounds, police said.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon.

The man, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared in Auckland District Court in front of Judge Hana Ellis, charged with murder.

The man appeared apprehensive as he entered the courtroom and had to be coaxed in by security staff.

Judge Ellis remanded the man in custody.

He will next appear in the High Court at Auckland on 18 September.

'...Our work here is not done'

Despite the arrest, Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said questions remain around Thorpe's alleged murder.

"This is a positive development in the investigation, but our work here is not done," Baldwin said.

He said police would continue collecting and analysing further CCTV footage, as well as speaking with witnesses.

"I know there will be questions about why this happened to Stephen, and our team have the important task now of piecing together all the information so the judicial process can be carried out," he said.

"Police staff will still be working in the community as part of the ongoing area canvas, and we still need anyone with information or CCTV to contact us."
