Police say a man shot in the Whangārei suburb of Ōtangarei is now in a stable condition in hospital.

Detective Inspector Al Symonds, of the Northland CIB, said the shooting, about 2.30pm on Wednesday, left the victim with moderate, non-life-threatening injuries.

A scene examination at the William Jones Drive property was expected to be completed later today.

Mr Symonds said police were working to understand the circumstances behind the shooting and identify the people responsible.

He said police were taking the matter seriously and urged the public to report any suspicious activity by calling 111.

Information about the shooting could also be passed to Crime Stoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
