An attempt to refloat the Manahau barge that is grounded on Carters Beach near Westport could be happening today.

A specialist recovery team spent Thursday working on plans to refloat the nearly 100-metre-long barge.

Operator Westland Mineral Sands said the barge was stable and there had not been any leaks.

The company would not confirm if a refloat attempt was happening Friday.

Buller District Council said Maritime NZ has asked for traffic and parking to be restricted at Carters Beach from 11am until 2pm.
