Auckland's power company is suggesting people charge their devices as outages affect north and western parts of the city.

Vector said the "wild weather" had set in across Auckland and they had dealt with outages in Wellsford, Dairy Flat and Waitākere.

Severe gusts of up to 120km/h are possible in the upper North Island until 9pm this evening, MetService said.

A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula until 9pm.

Earlier, highways across the South Island were closed by heavy snow.
