Fire crews are battling a blaze at an industrial estate near Hastings.

Fire and emergency says it was called to the Whakatu industrial estate about 11.30am this morning.

Shift manager Murray Dunbar said the fire broke out on the third floor of a building that was being demolished.

Thirteen trucks with crews from Napier, Hastings, Haumoana and Taradale brigades are still working to put out the fire.

Dunbar could not yet say how bad the damage was.

St John says it treated one patient in a minor condition at the scene.

Fire and Emergency is asking residents near Johnston Way to stay inside and keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke.

"We ask everyone to please stay away from the area while our crews fight the fire," it said on Facebook.

People on social media reported seeing thick black smoke.

Whisps of smoke can be seen coming from the fire, where crews are using a long ladder to douse the blaze.

Heavy rain has set in and no flames can be seen coming from the building.
