Health New Zealand is investigating after a healthcare worker was harmed by a patient.

A Te Whatu Ora spokesperson says the incident occurred on a ward at Hawke's Bay Hospital on 13 September.

Security staff intervened in a timely manner and the ward was fully staffed at the time of the incident, they said.

Patient and staff safety was its highest priority at all times, the spokesperson said, and all staff have access to de-escalation training.
