Dunedin is moving to introduce automated number plate recognition cameras to police car parking.

Hutt City Council has just begun trials of similar ANPR camera technology.

Dunedin City Council, in a tender notice, said it needed a system that could be mounted on vehicles to enforce parking restrictions in the city and surrounds.

"We need a system that can be easily deployed to monitor areas of parking and report on occupancy, duration and turnover."

It said it was looking around at what tech was on offer.

Any data gathered would belong to the council and had to be stored in a way that met privacy obligations, and anonymised information if need be.

ANPR systems are commonplace outside council premises in many places. Whakatāne put a dozen in around its district in recent months.
