There is "minimal chance" of severe weather as school returns for the last term of the year.

MetService only had one weather warning - for snowfall - as of Monday morning.

It covered Lewis Pass in the South Island and was in force until 9am.

According to MetService, snow was expected around the summit of the road on Sunday night but it would ease during Monday morning.

"Another 2 to 5cm may accumulate on the road above 800 metres."

Monday could see rain for the North Island and eastern South Island.

"Particularly heavy rainfall" was possible for eastern and central parts of the North Island.

Meanwhile, Auckland could see thunderstorms and hail in the morning and again in the evening.

As of 5.30am, the highest temperature was 14C in Ōpōtiki, while the lowest was -1.4C in Te Anau.

Lyall Bay in Wellington was the windiest with winds blowing at 46 kilometres an hour, and Wainuiomata in Lower Hutt was the wettest with 6.8mm of rainfall.

On Tuesday, MetService said high pressure would build over the lower South Island, with a "cole showery southerly flow" affecting eastern parts of both Islands.

On Wednesday, that high pressure was expected to move eastwards, and the cold winds should ease up.

MetService said Thursday could see it continue to move east with a new front approaching the lower South Island, creating a "moist northerly flow".

By Friday, the west coast of the South Island could possible see heavy rain, it said.

"At this stage, however, there is minimal risk of severe weather."
