A car has smashed into the front doors and foyer of Hamilton central police station, narrowly missing 10 members of the public and staff.
The smash happened just before 1pm on Wednesday and was apparently deliberate.
Police say the car crashed through two sets of glass doors and came to a halt about a metre from the front counter.
Police say initial indications are the driver is suffering from a mental health problems.
The driver is currently under guard at Waikato Hospital.
Hamilton's area police commander, Inspector Rob Lindsay, says his staff acted courageously. Two officers were injured when they tried to restrain the driver.
Mr Lindsay says one officer has a cut to the arm, which required stitches, and another a black eye.
He says it appears the car, carrying two men, was deliberately driven into the station.
Pair arrested over bank robbery
Meanwhile, armed police have arrested two Hamilton men on Wednesday after the aggravated robbery of a suburban bank in December.
Police say customers and staff were threatened with a firearm when the Chartwell KiwiBank branch was robbed.
Police say the armed offenders squad secured two properties in Hamilton East and detectives arrested a 21-year-old and a 24-year-old.
They have been charged with aggravated robbery and will appear in Hamilton District Court.
They say further charges are likely and more arrests are possible.
