Fire and Emergency were alerted to the blaze by an automated alarm and 10 appliances attended the scene. It was contained in less than an hour.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson an investigator was working to determine the cause of the fire.

Pearce said they were concerned to hear about the fire in the block that has eight flats in it and Kāinga Ora was onsite assessing the impact of the fire.

"Our immediate focus was on checking to make sure all our customers were safe... We are arranging alternative accommodation for these customers while we assess the extent of the damage to their homes and organise any repair work that is necessary."
