A driver who hit and seriously injured a teenage cyclist in Taupō has been urged by police to come forward.

The teenager was left with serious injuries after the incident on 5 November at about 6.50pm at the intersection of Rifle Range Rd and Tamamutu St.

The driver of the car fled the scene, a police spokesperson said.

"The teenage cyclist was transported to Rotorua Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

"Police would like to thank motorists who stopped and assisted the victim at the scene, and those who have already come forward with information."

The driver should "come forward and do the right thing", the spokesperson said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw a grey car with damage consistent with a crash in the area should get in touch with police.
