The principal of an Auckland girls' school says students are safe after a stabbing near campus earlier today.

Police were called to the scene of an assault on Howe Street in Freemans Bay at 3.24pm on Thursday.

One person was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries consistent with a stab wound.

Nearby Auckland Girls' Grammar went into lockdown, but Principal Ngaire Ashmore said students were not involved.

"We just know that's someone from the public, we have not heard from the police but we understand there may have been someone who had a knife or had been stabbed," she said.

"We were advised to go into lockdown, we went into lockdown, and then stayed into lockdown until we were given the all clear."

Ashmore said her team responded quickly to the situation.

"I just am really thankful for my team who jumped into action straight away to make sure that all of our staff and students that were on safe.

Police said the person responsible fled the scene in a vehicle.

"We are working to locate the vehicle, and to identify the offender," a police spokesperson said.
